Infrared Training Center Launches Roofing Inspection Course
8/28/2003
New, hands-on curriculum focuses on the rapid detection of moisture from above and below a roofing system.
N. Billerica, MA (August 11, 2003) – The Infrared Training Center (ITC), the world’s largest infrared (IR) training organization, has announced a new, hands-on Roof Moisture Inspection Course suitable for both new and experienced IR camera users. No experience in thermography is necessary.
The two-day course opens with a review of basic IR camera operation techniques including: how to correct for effects such as distance and emissivity, how to distinguish between hot spots and reflections, how to make direct vs. indirect readings, and how to use heat transfer concepts to interpret thermographic images.
The course then addresses fundamental roofing and building-specific topics including: different types of roofing systems and building construction, the ASTM C1153 Inspection Standard, indoor and outdoor IR roofing inspection methods, good roof safety procedures, how to recognize typical thermal patterns associated with roofing and other building leaks, and how to use specialized moisture verification devices. Students are taught how to make informed recommendations in the context of building repair cost containment and how to quickly generate reports that incorporate their thermographic findings and commentary using advanced infrared report generating software.
"We developed this curriculum in response to high demand from building owners and thermographers involved in other aspect of building and plant maintenance and operations," said Bob Madding, PhD, the Director of ITC. "We have documented cases in which roofing inspections using IR thermography have pinpointed easily repaired causes of extensive roof leakage, and have saved building owners millions of dollars in unnecessary tear offs."
Roofing Inspection classes are held at ITC headquarters in North Billerica, MA, which features modern multi-media classrooms, unique infrared applications laboratories and a well-equipped computer training facility, at ITC regional training locations throughout North and South America, and at customer facilities.
